A one to one coaching conversation in progress

Welcome

I spent eighteen years being the person who could not say the difficult thing.

Two operating roles, one board seat, and a stretch as a chief executive taught me that the constraint at the top is almost never information. It is the absence of one honest conversation, held often enough to matter.

So that is what I do now. No frameworks to sell, no assessment to buy, and no report going back to whoever approved the budget. Just a standing appointment with someone whose only interest in the room is you, and who will say the thing your team has decided is too expensive to say.

Coaching paths

Four ways in. Each one starts with the same free conversation.

01The first ninety days

For leaders who have just stepped up or stepped in. We use the window while you are still allowed to ask basic questions, and we build the read on the organisation that you will rely on for the next three years. Weekly at first, because the early decisions compound hardest.

Weekly, 60 minutesFirst 90 daysNew in seat
02Executive coaching

The core engagement. Twice a month for six months, ninety minutes each, with direct access between sessions. We work on whatever is actually keeping you up, which in my experience is rarely the thing written on the development plan. Long enough to change something, short enough to stay honest about whether it is working.

Twice monthly, 90 minutesSix monthsDirect access between
03Leadership team consulting

When the problem is the group rather than any one person. I sit in, watch how decisions actually get made, and then say out loud what everyone already knows but has agreed not to mention. Usually a quarter of work, structured around your existing leadership rhythm rather than an offsite.

One quarterTeam of 5 to 12Observed sessions
04Founder and board advisory

For founders carrying a decision they cannot put in front of the board yet, and for chairs who need a second read before they act. Retained, on call, and deliberately unstructured. Some months we speak weekly, some months not at all.

Fit

I turn down more work than I take.

Coaching only works when both people believe it can. If we are not a fit I will say so on the first call and point you somewhere better, at no cost and with no hard feelings.

This is for you if

  • You are a founder, in the C-suite, or one step away from it.
  • You are carrying a decision you cannot discuss inside your own organisation.
  • You have been performing competence for a while and would like to stop.

It is not for you if

  • You want a consultant with a deck at the end.
  • Someone else is sending you here to be fixed.
  • You want a plan more than you want to be honest.

What the work covers

Six conversations that come up in almost every engagement.

The conversation you cannot have internally

The decision that cannot go to your team, your board, or your partner yet.

Thinking time that is actually protected

Deciding without complete information

The premise

A coach is not someone who knows your business better than you do. It is someone whose only interest in the conversation is you. Kevin Brennan

In their words

I had three advisors telling me what to do and nobody asking what I actually thought. Kevin was the first person in two years who let a silence run long enough for me to answer honestly.

I came in wanting help with a restructure. Six months later the restructure was the least important thing we changed. My leadership team noticed before I did.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Anything not covered here, ask me directly.

01What actually happens in a session?

You talk, I ask, and we stay on one thing longer than feels comfortable. No slides, no worksheets. Most sessions end with a decision you had already half made and can now defend properly.

02Who sees what we discuss?

Nobody. If your organisation is paying, they receive an invoice and confirmation that sessions took place. They do not receive themes, progress notes, or a summary, and I say so to the sponsor before we start.

03What does it cost?

Engagements are priced as a whole rather than by the hour, and I quote after the first call so the number reflects the actual scope. Retained founder advisory is billed monthly. I do not take equity.

04How is this different from consulting?

A consultant hands you their answer. I make sure you can defend yours. If what you need is somebody to build the operating model, I will tell you on the first call and point you to two people who do it well.

05Do you work outside the United States?

Yes. Roughly half of current clients are outside North America and everything runs remotely. I hold early and late slots so nobody is permanently taking the awkward hour.

06What if it is not working?

We review at the halfway mark and either continue or stop cleanly, with the remaining balance returned. A coaching relationship that both people are politely enduring is worse than none.

Ready when you are

The conversation you have been putting off is the one worth booking.

Thirty minutes. You describe the situation, I tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it, and if I am not I will tell you who is.
